We often try to have our fortune told through the lens of past traumas or failures. As the saying goes, "Not in this life." This kind of fatalism reveals how deeply we believe in a linear and predetermined order of things. Yet almost everyone has, at least once, dreamed of living an entirely different life. We imagine the godlike power to reset everything—like in a game where everything can be deleted with a single move. If we could be reborn, what kind of life would we choose? What would we dream, if we were truly free—from our past, from our wounds, from all we’ve been told is possible?
우리는 때때로 과거에 겪었던 부정적인 사건이나 실패한 경험을 바탕으로 자신의 미래를 점쳐보곤 한다. 유행어처럼 쓰이는 '이번 생은 망했다'는 말은 이러한 선형적이고 운명론적인 질서에 대한 믿음을 드러낸다. 동시에 누구나 한 번쯤, 가능만 하다면 완전히 다른 인생을 살아보고 싶다는 꿈을 꾼다. 게임에서 원하지 않는 결과를 얻었을 때 손쉽게 리셋(Reset)할 수 있는 그 전지전능함을 상상해보는 것이다. 만약 우리가 다시 태어날 수 있다면 어떤 꿈을 꾸게 될까? 다시 말해 과거의 경험이나 부정적인 사건, 상식으로부터 완전히 자유할 수 있다면?

In the ladder game1, I was cast in the role of a victim. What had happened in the hidden rungs at the center of the ladder? Without knowing why, I lived out a predetermined scenario, like a sponge absorbing all kinds of misfortunes. In the end, I held a funeral—not to grieve, but to survive. It became a psychodrama staged for myself, born from a fierce will to live. I flipped the game board I once believed was already set, and returned to the starting point—alive.
삶의 사다리타기 게임에서 나는 피해자의 배역을 맡게 되었다. 가려져 있던 사다리의 중앙에서 무슨 일이 있었던 걸까? 나는 영문도 모른 채 온갖 불행을 빨아들이는 스펀지처럼 정해진 시나리오를 살았다. 그리고 마침내 살아내기 위한 장례식을 치렀다. 그것은 삶에 대한 놀라운 투지에서 비롯된 자신을 위한 사이코드라마였다. 이미 결론이 났다고 생각했던 사다리타기 게임의 판을 뒤집어 나는 다시 출발점으로 돌아왔다.

A massive star, once it has exhausted all its inner energy, collapses under its own gravity. But in some cases, a counterforce emerges from that implosion, and the star is reborn as a neutron star. This hyperdense body spins at a staggering speed—sometimes up to 716 rotations per second. Small but terrifying, it is, paradoxically, the birth of a dead star. In this strange and violent rebirth, I recognized something familiar. Before long, I realized: I had become a hyperdense neutron star.
내부의 에너지를 모두 소진한 거대질량의 별은 강한 중력에 의해 스스로 붕괴되지만, 이 때 발생하는 반발력으로 인해 중성자별로 다시 태어나는 운명을 맞이하기도 한다. 초고밀도의 중성자별은 엄청난 속도로 자전한다. 무려 1초에 716회 회전하기도 하는 이 작지만 무시무시한 별은 놀랍게도 죽은 별의 탄생이라는 점에서 나와 유사한 역사를 가지고 있다. 머지않아 나는 자신이 초고밀도의 중성자별로 다시 태어났다는 것을 알게 되었다.

Events and states are nothing more than sequences—each with its own probability. When we step away from what is considered logical or universal—roles we’ve been assigned, the linearity of past and future, or the cause-and-effect chain—we begin to observe an entirely different world. The birth of a neutron star, defying every conventional understanding, affirms the belief that fate is not fixed—and reveals the possibility of entirely new ways of being. Through my own trajectory, I try to enact the possibility that anyone can become a star.
사건과 상태는 저마다 일정한 확률을 가지고 단지 나열되어 있을 뿐이다. 주어진 역할 또는 과거-미래, 원인-결과와 같이 보편타당하다고 여겨지는 인과관계에서 벗어날 때 우리는 또 다른 세계를 관측할 수 있다. 모든 상식을 벗어난 중성자별의 탄생은 우리에게 정해진 운명이 존재하지 않는다는 믿음, 그리고 새로운 존재 방식을 보여준다. 누구나 별이 될 수 있다는 가능성을 실천하는 나의 행보가 삶에서 맞닥뜨리는 온갖 좌절과 불안으로부터 우리의 고유함을 보호해줄 수 있기를 바란다.
